Gotham – a Filmic Symphony

Listen to Michael Gordon’s ”Gotham,” a filmic symphony in collaboration with filmmaker Bill Morrison. For this program, these two artists discuss their ongoing collaboration of new music and old decaying silent film prints.

”Gotham,” brought to life by the team at the Ridge Theatre who put together Gordon’s 2001 multi-media experience ”Decasia,” is structured along the Decasia model with the city of New York as its subject and star. The live concert version incorporates projections (including an opening sequence with a sheep), re-edited archival film, multi-tiered sets, and musicians who sometimes seem actually to inhabit the projected environment…

Another Sort of Diplomacy

I’m writing from Sicily, where I just arrived with my ensemble, the Michael Gordon Band. We’re playing a concert at the Etna Festival in Catania. As I’m sitting here in this beautiful Italian hotel, I’m thinking about how lucky I am to be able to travel around the world playing music. There’s no way that this could be possible without the weighty investment that most Western and Asian countries make in the arts. Timber US premiere and tour

On October 14 at Bowling Green State University, Mantra Percussion gives the US premiere of Michael Gordon's percussion sextet, Timber — followed by a North American tour that includes the Canadian premiere on October 22 at the X Avant Festival (with indie rock-duo Buke & Gass).

The new work, an evening-length tour de force scored for six graduated wooden 2x4s brings the physicality, endurance and technique of percussion performance to a new level…
